A GOOD turn out of Colchester Harriers appeared at the inaugural ten-kilometre road race held at Colchester Garrison.

Taking in the roads and tracks of the military area, all the runners enjoyed the course.

Melanie Moore, who goes from strength to strength, ran her fastest ever 10km in 46 minutes 40 seconds to take the over-45 prize, while other trophy winners were Liz Cudmore as first over-60 in 51m 43s and Mick Bond was first man over-45 in 37m 27s as he finished fifth overall.

Other Harrier finishers were: Arthur Whiston 42m 40s, David Gayle 43m 4s, Pat Marsh 43m 51s, Fay Helliwell 49m 24s, John Cooke 50m 24s, Toni Wilson 50m 38s, Sue Sorrell 55m 28s, Christine Wakeling 57m 34s, Shirly Hilyard 58m 26s, Sally Sharp 61m 24s, Isla Sharp 63m 10s.

Meanwhile, strong team of Harriers entered the Great Baddow Ten, but first home for the green vests was veteran Paul Helliwell in in fourth place.

After running two marathons under two hours 50 minutes in a week, it was a tribute to Helliwell’s tough training schedule that he could pull off a personal best of 59m 10s and take the over-40 trophy.

Sandy MacMillen ran his third personal best of the week in one hour 1m 10s to finish 11th overall and third veteran, while David Wright found the course tough but clocked a reasonable 1h 2m 12s for 18th position.

While Rob Gibby ran a good first five, he found the return trip hard but was good value for his 1h 2m 55s. Annette Oakman had a confortable training run after her return from an eye operation and Harriers’ amazing 81-year-old Pete Thomas ran a creditable 1h 42m and took the conditions in his stride.

Thomas still had runners he was giving 50 years to behind him.
