Nearly 400 children took part in a primary school athletics championship.

Youngsters representing 16 schools took part in the Colchester-Blackwater School Sport Partnership (CBSSP) event, held at Colchester Garrison.

Birch Primary School successfully defended their title from last year, amassing an impressive points total in the small schools’ category.

Feering Primary edged out Baynards Primary for second and third places respectively, with Langham Primary fourth.

In the big schools’ category, Hamilton Primary School (120 points) secured a narrow victory over last year’s winners, Prettygate Junior School (116). Throughout the day, both schools traded places for top spot.

However, Hamilton secured the overall title thanks to a strong set of relay performances.

Kelvedon St Mary’s Primary (105 points) produced a consistent performance and they were rewarded with an excellent third-place finish, just ahead of Colchester High School (102).

Other schools to compete in the day’s events included Gosbecks, Highwoods, Kings Ford Junior, Myland, Stanway, St George’s New Town, St John’s Green and St Teresa’s Primary School.
