STANWAY ROVERS skipper Pip Boyland believes his side have the firepower to enjoy an extended run in this season’s FA Vase.

The in-form Hawthorns side are preparing for a big second-round tie at St Margaretsbury tomorrow (3pm).

They will be hoping it is another stepping stone en route to emulating their heroics of 2015, when they got to within one match of the quarter-finals before losing at St Austell.

Boyland is confident and believes his side can keep up their winning form in both the Vase and Thurlow Nunn League.

“We went to Yaxley in the last round with just one sub, against a side who were banging goals in for fun and have got real prestige, and won 1-0,” he said.

“We held out and nicked a goal and it just goes to show what kind of squad we’ve got here.

“It will be hard at St Margaretsbury.

“It’s never easy, but if we’ve got a full squad and subs who are fit and ready to come on then we’ll get through.

“We’ve got the potential to go on.

“We’re all pulling in the same direction and there’s no-one in the changing room feeling differently.”

Stanway are currently second in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division and hot on the heels of leaders Mildenhall Town.

“We’ve got more firepower this year,” said the club captain, referring to free-scoring duo Jamie Shaw and Billy Hunt.

“We’ve got the two boys up front who are proving they can bang them in on a regular basis.

“When they’re on their game, the whole team plays through them.

“We know we can keep clean sheets and we did that on a regular basis last season.

“We picked up a lot of points and won a lot of games, but they were often tighter matches.

“Now we’ve these two boys firing and it’s clear to see at this level that if you’ve got a goal-scorer, you’re going to do well.

“We’ve got that and hopefully with them doing so well this could be our year (to get promoted).

“We’ll look to stay in touch with the top teams and then see where we are at Christmas.

“That’s always a key time in the football calendar and that’s when I start to look at the table and say ‘it’s time to knuckle down’.

“A lot of our players are capable of playing in the Ryman League. Absolutely.

“And with two or three extra who can come in and do a job, we would have a squad that’s more than capable of competing at a higher level.

“We would be able to survive and it’s exciting.”
