MATT Cripps and Phil Kelly have penned contracts with Brightlingsea Regent.

And delighted boss James Webster believes both are “huge signings” that represent a “big step in the right direction” in terms of his preparations for next season.

The pair have joined Ricky Griggs in agreeing FA contracts with the Ryman League side.

Cripps was joint players’ player-of-the-year last season – along with supporters’ choice Griggs – and also scooped the manager’s award handed out by Webster.

Kelly finished as joint top-scorer, with 18 goals.

“Matt and Phil had their best seasons yet and that was reflected in the success they enjoyed at our awards night,” said Webster.

“It’s great that the club have rewarded them and I see it as a big step in the right direction, in terms of our preparations for next season.

“They’re huge signings. Matt was excellent last season and, as I’ve said before, I think he’s got a big future ahead of him.

“I can count on one hand the number of mistakes he made last season. There were hardly any and that’s great going, for a centre-half. “He’s so solid and assured. He rarely has a bad game, if at all, and I know I can trust him and count on him.

“Phil has been an important player here for the last couple of years but he really came into his own last season.

“He’s become our talisman and the main focal point of our attack.

“Despite missing a big chunk of last season through injury, he still finished as joint top-scorer with 18 goals. I’m confident next year will be his best yet.”

Webster is now setting his sights on bringing in “one or two” new signings, to top up his ambitious squad.

And he confirmed that the bulk of last season’s squad have also agreed to stay, including goalkeeper Andy Plummer, Jake Turner, Josh Gould and Jake Gould.

But Regent could have to do without the services of Amir Berkane.

The former Ipswich Town youngster looks set to take up a scholarship in America.

Jake Gordon, who made such an impression on loan last season, has returned to Chelmsford City.

But Webster has made no secret of the fact he would love to re-sign him on loan.
