U's challenge blunted by razor-sharp Blades
5:45pm Saturday 16th February 2013 in Sport By Jonathan Waldron
Empty-handed - Freddie Sears and his Colchester United team-mates came away from their match at Sheffield United with a 3-0 defeat.
Colchester United were beaten 3-0 by promotion-chasing Sheffield United this afternoon.
Goals from Barry Robson, Kevin McDonald and Dave Kitson condemned the U's to defeat, in front of a crowd of more than 16,000 at Bramall Lane.
Michael Doyle also hit the post in the first half for the U's, for whom Freddie Sears came closest to scoring in the first half.
U's boss Joe Dunne said: "I was disappointed with our last ten minutes of the match, because I thought we lost a bit of belief in ourselves.
"It's not easy going behind early on like that, because you work all week on things and then you're chasing the game.
"I thought we got back into the game really well after that and got into some good attacking positions but the end product wasn't as good as it has been of late.
"But I was quite pleased at half-time and I think in the end, the 3-0 defeat was harsh."

As one door closes ...Another door slams in your face...The manager says he was disapointed with the last 10 mins, From what I saw, we we were strictly 2nd best throughout. Why are we so darn unpredictable? Last week It looked like we had turned the corner, and now back to square one.

It was a bit of a scrappy affair, although I thought Sheff. Utd. worked the width of their pitch to good effect.

It's actually Bramall Lane Nora.

Colchester was important 2000 years ago, but now it is a provincial town with little identity of its own, which closes its museums and closes its bus station.
It was a miracle that we had our two years in the Championship, and even a few weeks dreaming of being in the play-offs for the Premiership, but Nora cannot be serious in expecting us to match the crowds of a big club like Sheffield United.

We've won 3 out of our last five games. Losing to Swindon (currently 6th) and Sheff Utd (currently 2nd) which realistically we wouldn't have expected anything more from.
We've still got to play Hartlepool, Bury, Oldham, Shrewsbury and Carlisle who are all around us, plus a few other mid-table teams who will probably have nothing to play for as the season goes on. These are the games that are more important to win, not the Sheff Utd, Swindon, Tranmere and Bournemouth.
In the three games we did win I saw lots of improvements compared to earlier on in the season and think we can battle our way through.
We are in a transitional period and it's going to take more than half a season for Joe to turn things around.

I have to disagree with a few on here. I think we can survive the drop this year. We need to keep real though and appreciate that it's not going to be easy.

We're not singing anymore!!! wrote:This post hits a lot right on the head and sums up so much. I agree with you completely on this. We CAN survive the drop and we have to win the right games and pick up points here and there where we can. The important thing, should results go against us in coming games and we end up in the bottom four, is to not let that affect us and focus on accumulating points all the way to the last game. It's the position on the last day that matters. We need positivity from here on in and not negativity. We can analyse the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" come the end of the season. From now to the end of the season it's results that matter and we've a better chance of those being positive with everyone pulling in the right direction.

We now have to win half the number of games we have left to avoid the drop. Can we do it? Yes, but it's very unlikely!
