U's beaten by relegation rivals Scunthorpe
4:52pm Saturday 12th January 2013 in Sport By Jonathan Waldron
On target - Freddie Sears scored the U's consolation goal against Scunthorpe.
Colchester United suffered a club record ninth successive league defeat this afternoon after losing 2-1 to fellow strugglers Scunthorpe United.
Goals from Jimmy Ryan and Karl Hawley left Colchester with a mountain to climb.
And although substitute Freddie Sears pulled a goal back for the U's just before the hour, it was not enough to prevent them losing to their relegation rivals and dropping into the bottom four.

With these players we have no hope, and the problem is no one wants to buy them.

As well as effort lacking in certain quarters, I have to say it's the weakest line-up I can remember seeing for many years.
Quite simply we looked what we are: a bunch of on-loan youngsters not man enough for the job. We are poor, even against the standards of Scunthorpe. I can see no way that relegation can be avoided.
Goalkeeper and full-back positions are a nightmare.
Sorry, Joe and Mark: this was pathetic .

A tight defence gives confidence and impetus to the midfield and forwards to exploit the best of their own ability, if you dont concede, you dont lose.
At this level of football, all talk of team formation..4-4-2. 5-4-1. 10 past six, is absolute twaddle, we just dont have the player quality to play intricate tactical football.
Boothroyd knew this, hence the long ball, over the top, not pretty, but direct and sometimes effective.
John Ward tried a more defensive tack, again not pretty, hence a lot of boring draws, But he did give us THREE top ten League one finishes, Yes we were punching above our weight, but you cant take that away from him.
Now Joe Dunne has tried his utmost to bring us some joy, and for a time he had some success but it didn't last, and the beating by Chelmsford was a huge setback, it knocked the stuffing out of us.
But then again, as I've always said managers, coach'es can only play the cards their dealt with. There's a lot of talk of getting an experienced manager in, but lets face it, unless we get another Paul lambert, the immediate future looks bleak..

I can fully respect players if they've come off the pitch trying their hardest but saw very little of this today. Most of the time they were swanning around like it was a testimonial.
Cousins was a joke with the first goal.....was he trying to wave at the ball as it went past him ???
Wilson and Rose both need shooting. How many more times is Rose going to be picked for the team ????
Thought Massey had a good first half but disappeared in the second. The Chelsea guy wasn't up to it. I thought Bean was playing ok but got taken off!!!!!!
Sears was the only player who seemed to show a little desperation to get something from the game. Just a shame that nobody else matched his enthusiasm.
Not sure if Joe is blame. I like him a lot and want to see him do well but the players just don't seem to be doing it for him.
At the moment I would rather pay to see 11 fans play. At least they would have heart and pride even if they don't have the fat wallets that the current bunch of lazy squad have.
Down in the dumps but up the U's

4-5-1, 4-4-2, 8-1-1, 1-1-8 it does not matter. Freddie sears has to play through the middle. We have lost this one, but there is hope.
Would you mind explaining what Hope ?
I went today and truthfully didn't see much hope !!! That's not me being negative or argumentative. It would be nice know what it is that I'm missing when watching the games.

We do not have the kind of tactictal players, that can play the kind of football we would all love to watch. Joe's inexperience in trying something new has backfired badly in his face. For me one of the players that has suffered more than anybody else to the new style, is Magnus. He was used to just clearing his lines upfield by hooving the ball forward or by a header. Now he has to stop, and then look around first, before he passes the ball, which he looks very uncomfortable with. Bringing some one else in now, will not save us. Instead Joe needs a good weeks break away from the club and the players so to get his head straight. It's obvious just by looking at him the huge strain and stress he is under. He needs all the support he can get and certainly people not jumping on his back.
It's a known fact, and it's been said many times before: Any team coach worth his salt, will build his team from the defence upwards, A tight defence gives confidence and impetus to the midfield and forwards to exploit the best of their own ability, if you dont concede, you dont lose. At this level of football, all talk of team formation..4-4-2. 5-4-1. 10 past six, is absolute twaddle, we just dont have the player quality to play intricate tactical football. Am I the only person who saw a really open game today that could have ended 5-0 or 0-5?????? Not pretty, but entertaining.
I realise that we have lost 9 in a row and I know how bad things look, but we are not a million miles away from staying up. Although I do admit we are a million miles from promotion.
Myhouse3, I think you have a valid point regards to the body language only I see it as a defeatist mentality. The players looked beaten through a lack of confidence and not a lack of confidence.
Nora, I agree with you 90% of the time and again I do regards to the talk of formation hence my sarcastic 1-1-8 formation. I do however think that you and me both know that colchester don't want another lambert. Why have your fingers burnt twice?
Crazy, you was right regards to Drey Wright. Although next season would have benefitted him.

In reality, I didn't like the way Lambert used us to further his career, but 'of course' he was relatively unknown, and very ambitious, and thats the kind of manager ( I think) who will lift us out of the present doldrums.
Sorry if my comment seems rather down-beat, maybe I've been reading too many negative comments on here, and It's getting to me..
Up the U's.
