Marvin Sordell insists the best is yet to come for him as a Colchester United player.

The former Premier League striker has bagged three goals in nine appearances for the U’s and scored their winner in the 2-1 victory over Port Vale.

Sordell has led the line well for Colchester since arriving on a free transfer last month and has helped them climb into the top half of the table.

But ahead of today's home clash with high-flying Walsall, he has stressed he still has plenty more to offer at the U’s.

Sordell said: “The fans have definitely not seen the best of me yet.

“Hopefully, I can add more goals in the next few games.

“The more we play together and the more time we spend together, the better understanding we’ll have on the pitch and that helps as well.

“I’m getting chances but sometimes it’s just that a bit more concentration and hunger to make sure that chance goes in, rather than thinking that I miss one chance I’ll get another.

“We try to get the ball down, play football and create chances.

“It’s enjoyable for me and I know opportunities will come.

“I know that if I keep getting in the right areas, the goals will come.

“I’m not happy with my number of goals but I’m improving bit by bit, with every game.

“It’s probably the most games I’ve played in a few years, so as I get fitter things will happen more naturally.

“I’m getting my sharpness back and getting used to playing every game.

“I came here to play games and work hard.

“I’m trying to improve every day and I want to help improve the players around me, too.”

Sordell will be hoping to help Colchester continue their impressive home form today, against a Walsall side who lie second in League One.

“Walsall are doing very well but on our day we can compete with anyone in this division,” added Sordell, who is under contract at Colchester until the end of the season.

“They’ll know that and they’ll come here ready, so we’ve got to match their competitive and let our quality shine.

“You can never really say what’s going to happen but on our day we can match anyone - as long as we’re at and have that hunger and competitive mentality.”
