Colchester United are on the verge of completing a six-month loan deal for Chelsea defender Daniel Pappoe.

The 19-year-old featured for the U's in their 2-0 win at Bishop's Stortford this afternoon and the U's are set to sign the centre-back on loan from the Blues until January.

U's boss Joe Dunne said: "We're getting the paperwork through and Daniel will be with us until January.

"He's a player I've seen when I've been on the circuit and he's a very assured centre-back who needs a breakthrough now.

"He gives us great strength, power and an opportunity to work the ball.

"He's young and he reminds me a bit of George Elokobi, when he first came to Colchester."

Goals from Gavin Massey and Clinton Morrison gave the U's a 2-0 win in their friendly at Woodside Park.

Dunne said: "I'm delighted with how the overall day went.

"We got a lot more from it than we could have possibly had imagined from it, what with the heat and the way that Stortford kept the ball.

"They gave us one or two problems which was great for us and we've now finished this four-game period with everyone having sufficent game time, to move into the next phases with games against West Ham and Tottenham and then Braintree."

What's the problem with Sears as he has only played 45 minutes and that was in the first game against Heybridge? Noticeable that our main strike force have found it difficult to score against vastly inferior opposition. If I was Joe Dunne I would be a little concerned.

If Pappoe is going to be on loan he has to be given plenty of game time over the 6 months. Who is the one to make way for him or can he play at left back?

No real debate to had, it's got to be Eastman partnering Pappoe as both Magnus and Thompson are far too inconsistent to play big parts in this seasons campaign.
*
Although it should be noted that Pappoe has had a woeful injury record in recent seasons.
*
Bizarrely Alex Gilbey has featured as a center-back this pre-season so far.
*
I expect Joe will want to bring in a couple of specialist full-backs, which could include trialist Craig Braham-Barrett.

agree with medicated soup in regards to Thompson and Magnus being to inconsistent, however if Joe will be torn towards having one experienced CB in the back 4.

Will be interesting to see where Gilbey fits in this season. Do people think he's good enough to break into the 11?
