Dunne rues controversial decision
10:46pm Tuesday 20th November 2012 in Colchester Utd By Jonathan Waldron
Unhappy - Joe Dunne believes Coventry's second goal in their 3-1 win over Colchester United should not have stood.
Colchester United manager Joe Dunne could not hide his disappointment after seeing his side beaten 3-1 at home by Coventry City.
The U’s were left aggrieved after William Edjenguele’s header was controversially allowed to stand for the Sky Blues, despite the assistant referee initially flagging Gary McSheffrey offside.
Colchester were already trailing to Franck Moussa’s goal by that point and went in 2-0 down at the break.
And although Tom Eastman’s header from Anthony Wordsworth’s free-kick with 19 minutes to go gave them hope, David McGoldrick’s tidy finish with two minutes to go sealed the points for the Sky Blues.
Dunne said: “I believe Coventry’s second goal was offside and he (the assistant referee) has put the flag up straight away.
“I think the assistant overruled himself with his flag still in the air.
“I always made a promise to myself as a manager to never get aggressive with officials and I think that they have a hard job.
“But we’ve had a couple of calls now in the last three games that have aided us not being able to win the game.
“It’s very disappointing because I thought up until the first goal, we were well in the game.”
Dunne felt the final scoreline was harsh on his side but admitted Coventry’s class told in the end.
“I don’t think 3-1 was a fair reflection of the game and that’s not being disrespectful to Coventry,” added the U’s boss.
“Their quality told in the end but there’s a way to lose football matches.
“I knew the initial part of the game would be tough and it was a bit tight.
“Both teams were cancelling each other out at times but I felt we were just starting to get a foothold on the game.
“We tested their goalkeeper and hit the bar and we also had a goal chalked off.
“I think that was the right decision but we were well on top.
“But then they broke quickly and all of a sudden, we were 1-0 down.
“It was a lapse in concentration and unfortunately, that’s been a bit of an Achilles heel for us of late.
“If it had stayed at 1-0 we’re still well in the game but I think the second goal changed the whole complexion of it.
“I felt we could get back into it though and after we scored, Brian Wilson had a great chance at the back post which the keeper made a great save from.
“We asked questions from their back four and got into good areas but in the end, class was the difference and (David) McGoldrick is an excellent player at this level.”

Agree Dunne, the officals were shocking to say the least. But Dunne I think you need to start looking for a replacement for Watt. Since he got injured, we have provided less chances to score. He used to run at players too. The passing game is all well and good, but you then need someone that will then sprint with the ball through players, and make deadly crosses across goals like Coventry did.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Rose is not a defender. He looks ok going forward but is so poor when it comes to defending. Please give someone else a chance. The rest of the defence looks a joke too. Every single attack by any other teams looks like it's going to result in a goal
I'm still behind Joe and the team but if we're not careful, we're going to be dragged back into a relegation battle.
Up the U's.

Also that Rose is no good in defence, he's passing needs to be better too. I feel that Rose could be a good winger as he does have a little flair, and it's clear that he is attack minded, he could grab a few goals too.

Like most others, I didn't feel that we deserved the 1-3 scoreline although I don't necessarily agree with a number of fans on BBC Essex after the match who thought we were uninspiring.
The passing game is fine but we don't have enough movement ahead of it and the service to forwards (maybe as a consequence of this) was poor, especially in the first half. The Sky Blues found their men with balls to their feet so much more effectively than us. This seemed to be the main difference between the two sides.
It's plain to see, every match, that our defence is brittle and the full-backs (both of them) are weak both in defending and in distribution of the ball. It beats me how Rose, in particular, keeps his place in the team when other squad members could be given the chance to show their worth.
WHCS is a much better place to be since the new regime took over (it could hardly be otherwise) but I also fear that we will be flirting with the relegation zone for too long this season and the best we can hope for from another disappointing season is to steer ourselves far enough away from the bottom four to make the last few games academic.
Such aspirations, hey?!

Supose it was Rosey's turn to recieve the flak this time. I thought the ref robbed us of a good goal.. But I reckon their second goal was given because the guy who was offside, was deemed, not interfeering with play. Only a 3,000 crowd again, not good..Up the Us.

Are you telling me that you enjoy watching him play, and feel he is a good defender? because surely you are not watching the game the majority on here watch.
Also we were not robbed of a goal as it was a defection from Jabo who was unfortunately offside.

Of course it does not matter how well Rose does play, some fans just don't like him and never will.
I am a big fan of Coker. I see Coker as our best left back. But Rose can do the job for us. After all does Rose not have 3 goals this season from left back???? And does those three goals not make him our second best goalscorer, again, FROM LEFTBACK????
I realise that Cristiano Ronaldo is a unbelievable footballer. Far superior to anyone at Colchester United, but I remember Manchester United signing him and he used to score 1 in ten shots. All of the other shots would miss by miles. His tackling was a non starter and his diving was often unwatchable. But Fergie stuck with him, off loading troublesome Roy Keane and Ruud Van Nistelrooy who were vocal about Ronaldo being unplayable with. This allowed Ronaldo to blossom.
Now while I don't think Rose has the potential to play above league one, I do think that if he is allowed to have some game time, he might just be a fine and reliable left back for next season and beyond. Like Ronaldo, he has shown some promise but also some randomly bad patches also. Very hit and miss (if you will).
If he can Iron out the random mis crosses and time his forward running, we might have a solid player. He certainly has shown some promise this season.
When was the last time any Col U leftback scored 3 goals before christmas???? When was the last time White and Coker scored a goal??? Not a critism, I like them.
Give him some time.

It's all well and good that he scores goals, that's why myself and a few others suggested that he plays down the wing instead of defence. As he can't defend and has/will cost us goals. Coker did a very good job in parts of last season, and sometimes was the best U's player on the pitch. Now as he is young he has 'Potential' to succeed.

He's not vocal, doesn't motivate the team, doesn't delegate tasks, and doesn't attempt to hype up the crowd. Henderson one of those players that can either be very good (Bury) then be missing (Coventry) so I for one was glad that he was dubbed off.

Yes, it's great to have a goalscoring left-back, but if we only had some prolific goalscoring strikers, we could let the defenders defend.
As I've said before Rose could do with being a winger. The biggest weaknesses have been our defence when Magnus and Eastman are left against the opposition with the full backs in midfield.

Steve86 wrote:I take your point and the others that he might be better as a midfielder. It has crossed my mind too. But his goals often come from free kicks and dead balls, so technically he could be goalkeeper and still score 3 goals. Even the wonder goal that he scored from the corner this season was a result of rosé being the last defender.

I think the last two home games have shown Woody and Hendo working much harder and looking more like the players we know they can be. It's when they have a more low key (trying to be polite) performance that we moan about them.
Rose has scored 3 goals this season but how many goals has he cost us???? I bet we would have had more points without his errors and silly fouls around the box than any that we've gained through his goals. I still think going forward he looks good. Defensively he looks very weak. In fact, I’ve seen milk turn quicker.
Nora......
Try watching a game without your ROSE tinted glasses and maybe you would see what we're talking about.

on,and Sears are not out and out wingers and never will be. Swindon have recently signed Martin on loan from Norwich who is that type of player and would have been perfect for us.

I don't know how long Dunne will keep Rose at left back. Quite agree that he is better going forward but his defending is shocking. Coker has not been given a chance this season. He is technically good, defends well, doesn't lose the ball and can deliver good crosses. Dunne, don't be stubborn like your predecessor and stick with Rose - give the lad a chance!
