Ian Henderson wants to finish the season as Colchester United’s leading goalscorer after denting Sheffield Wednesday’s automatic promotion hopes.

Henderson marked his return to the U’s starting line-up with an early goal in their 1-1 draw with the Owls, which was played out in front of Colchester’s biggest home crowd of the season at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Henderson’s third-minute strike, which was cancelled out by Miguel Angel Llera’s second-half equaliser, was his ninth of the season and his first for three-and-a-half months.

The 27-year-old former Norwich City man is now three goals behind joint leading scorers Anthony Wordsworth and Steven Gillespie in the U’s scoring stakes.

Henderson said: “I’ve not really hit the net as regularly as I did last year.

“But I’m on target to finish with double figures against this year.

“Hopefully, I can add a few more goals between now and the end of the season and I still want to finish as our leading goalscorer.”
