Colchester United manager John Ward insisted he was not surprised by the performance of opponents Swindon Supermarine in the FA Cup.

The U's edged past their non-league opponents 1-0, thanks to David Mooney's first-half strike.

Marine, of the Zameretto League, came close to equalising in the second half and Jamie Gosling hit the post, as Colchester edged through to the third round.

Ward said: “It was no more than I expected – it was their big moment and they've really lived up to it.

“They've really played above themselves I guess and we've really had to show what we're about too.

“Cup football is all about no second chance and we wanted to make sure that we didn't go to a replay or get knocked out.

“We've done it the hard way but we've done it.

“We've had 17 shots at their goal which might surprise people and we've put away one of them.

“We scored a really good goal, with some slick football. "
