John Ward has put a smile on the faces of Colchester United’s players.

That’s the view of defender Matt Heath, who has revealed there has been a “massive change” at the U’s since last season.

Colchester ended last season in the doldrums, after a dramatic slump in form in the final two months saw them miss out on the play-offs.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd then left for Coventry City soon after and his replacement Ward has hit the ground running, losing just one of his opening 13 league games in charge.

Defender Heath - who made his first league start of the season last weekend - said the U’s players are enjoying playing under their new boss.

Heath told the Gazette: “There’s been a massive change from last season.

“The lads have taken to it very well and everyone’s playing with a smile on their face.

“We’re working hard in training but it’s enjoyable, too.

“The style is different but manager doesn’t tell us to play in a particular set way.

“He just wants us to make the right decisions as players."
