Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd said poor defending cost his side at Hartlepool United.

The U's were beaten 3-1 at Victoria Park, despite taking the lead through Ian Henderson's early goal.

A brace from Roy O'Donovan and another from James Brown sealed Pools victory.

Boothroyd said: “We started well – we scored a goal and we were deservedly on the front foot.

“But we made some poor decisions defensively and before you know it, we're 2-1 down.

“We're very disappointed.

“Some of the defending was poor. You can point fingers but it's a bit pointless.

“As long as there is a mathematical chance then we have to go after it, it's as simple as that."

Colchester have three matches remaining this season.

They are seventh in Coca-Cola League One, six points off the play-off places.

“Because we made such a good start it's got to a situation now where it's a disappointment for us and for our fans," added Boothroyd.

“But until it's over, we keep going and we crack on.

“I don't want the season to end, because I've come in late and I want to keep going and keep playing games."
