Colchester United cruised through to the second round proper of the FA Cup with a comprehensive 4-0 win at non-league Bromley this afternoon.

The U's eased to victory at Hayes Lane against their Blue Square South opponents to chalk up their first victory in the competition since 2006.

Colchester took the lead just after the half hour mark through Simon Hackney, one of three players recalled to the starting line-up.

The winger lashed home into the centre of the net after Kayode Odejayi had laid off goalkeeper Ben Williams' long kick.

Three minutes later, the U's doubled their lead.

Odejayi was allowed to run at the Bromley defence and shrugged off defender Rob Gillman before slotting past goalkeeper Gareth Williams.

The U's were in charge throughout and added a third goal with 19 minutes to go when Clive Platt headed in David Fox's corner at the near post.

And substitute Steven Gillespie wrapped things up with a minute to go when he headed in Fox's curling pass to complete a professional performance by the U's.

The draw for the second round proper of the FA Cup takes place tomorrow afternoon.
