There surely cannot be too many Colchester United midfielders who have enjoyed a more successful start to U’s life than David Fox.

The cultured midfielder arrived on a free transfer from Blackpool earlier in the summer with a glowing reputation.

And Fox’s upbringing at Manchester United, where he regularly played alongside the likes of established Premier League stars and international players Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson, has helped him evolve into a silky passer; a midfielder who makes things happen.

Indeed, not since Kevin Watson have Colchester boasted a player who can pull the creative strings in midfield.

It has seemingly not taken Fox long to adjust to life at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

His record in Coca-Cola League One so far impressively reads: played two, won two, scored two.

Fox’s fine strike against Yeovil Town on Saturday followed hot on the heels of his excellent free-kick on his debut, in the 7-1 thrashing of Norwich City on the opening day.

Indeed, Fox will head into Colchester’s home game with Gillingham tonight eager to maintain his encouraging start, both on a personal and club level.

Colchester manager Paul Lambert, who has likened the playmaker to Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, is not surprised by the impact Fox has made so far.

He said: “It was a great goal by David against Yeovil – he was at Manchester United and he’s a top player.

“He’s come in and is playing great.

“Technically, he’s excellent and his technique is different class.

“I just think he will be hungry to do well for us and that’s something I want all of my players to be.

“If they do well at their age, you get the best of them.

“They may move on to bigger things after that but if that happens, at least we may get a bit of money for them.”
