Colchester United manager Paul Lambert believes his side fully deserve to be top of Coca-Cola League One.

The U’s head into tomorrow night's home clash with Gillingham as the joint leaders of the division, following two league wins out of two.

Colchester are joint top of the division with Charlton Athletic and Leeds United, following their 2-1 win over Yeovil Town, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The U’s followed up their memorable 7-1 opening day victory at Norwich City with another well-deserved win, leaving manager Lambert delighted with the start his team have made to the new season.

He said: “The expectation levels are really high and the club is vibrant at the minute.

“If you can get off to a decent start, it breeds confidence.

“There are some huge clubs in our division and we are one of the smaller ones, by comparison.

“But we are up there on merit and we can do terrifically well.

“If you can get off to a decent start, it breeds confidence.”

Lambert praised his players for their performance in beating Yeovil.

“I thought that we were brilliant,” said the former Wycombe Wanderers chief.

“The players are full of confidence at the moment.

“The result against Norwich was sensational and I thought we were every bit as good (against Yeovil).

“It was there for everyone to see – we just look a real threat and a handful.”

The only downside to the U’s victory for Lambert came late in the game when he was sent from the dugout by referee Russell Booth.

The Nottinghamshire official felt Lambert had voiced his protestations too loudly, after he rejected Colchester’s claims for a penalty late in the game.

Lambert was reluctant to comment about Booth’s overall performance, after the game.

However, he confirmed he disagreed with the referee’s decision to award Yeovil a free-kick for a foul on Sam Williams, from which Ryan Mason scored a consolation goal for the visitors late on.

Lambert added: “I didn’t think it was a free-kick in the first place.

“It was pathetic but I would rather not talk about the referee.”
