Ipswich Town are set to play in a testimonial match for long-serving FC Clacton skipper Paul Hillier.

The Blues will send a reserve side to the Rush Green Bowl on Thursday, July 23.

Hillier has spent nine seasons with his home-town club over the course of 11 years.

He has made more than 400 appearances for the Ridgeons League side and also had a spell at Wivenhoe Town.

Tickets for the match will cost £5 for adults and £3 for OAPs and under-16s.

Meanwhile, former Town assistant boss John Gorman is set to be reunited with ex-Blues boss Jim Magilton.

The pair were sacked in April just before the Roy Keane regime got under way at Portman Road.

Magilton was recently appointed as Queens Park Rangers’ new manager, though, and Gorman is set to be his number two.

The former England coach is due to sign a contract early this week.

Ipswich are reportedly interested in signing highly-rated Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas.

The 19-year-old is said to have caught their eye during the recent Toulon tournament, where his side emerged triumphant after beating hosts France 1-0 in the final on Friday.

Vargas scored three goals in five games and was one of the stars of the competition.

Yesterday’s tabloid newspapers again linked Sunderland duo Paul McShane and Daryl Murphy with Ipswich.

Both have been repeatedly connected as Keane knows them from his time as manager at the Stadium of Light.

However, both have said that they want to stay at Sunderland and make an impression under new Black Cats boss Steve Bruce.

Liverpool’s David Ngog has again been linked with Town, too.

The 20-year-old striker was also in action in the Toulon tournament but in and out of the French side.

He failed to score any goals, although managed to convert a penalty in his side’s semi-final shoot-out against Argentina.

Former Ipswich hero Tony Mowbray is about to become the next manager of Glasgow giants Celtic.

The centre-half memorably scored in Town’s Championship play-off final win against Barnsley at Wembley in 2000.

He had been manager of West Bromwich Albion but Celtic and the Baggies have agreed a £2 million compensation package.
