ABBERTON are the toast of the Two Counties Championship this week after ending league leaders Mildenhall's undefeated run.

The Suffolk visitors had gone seven games unbeaten - won five with two declared void - before Saturday's Fingringhoe Road meeting with Abberton which ended in a glorious two-wicket win for the Essex hosts.

It was only Abberton's second win of the season back up in the top flight and their 20-point prize went a long way towards easing their problems at the wrong end of the division one table.

Skipper and part-time bowler Shaun Calladine was the hero.

Entering the attack in place of back-injury victim Ryan Savill, Calladine posted outstanding figures of four for 28 with his "right-arm dibbly dobblers," as Mildenhall's normally powerful batting line-up perished.

Having lost the toss, the visitors batted as if they needed to post a total of around 250 where conditions dictated that a score of 180 would be more realistic.

They eventually reached 153 all out in the 41st over, mainly due to a half-century from Francis Bester, which Abberton overhauled with eight wickets down 44 overs into their reply.

Their run-chase never ran smoothly with wickets falling at regular intervals.

But the ultimate victory was achieved thanks to a half-century from Jon Ward, supported by Richard Moxon with 34.
