COLCHESTER Golf Club's Mail on Sunday men's team eased through to the third round of the national competition.
They were drawn at home to Bury St Edmunds.
It would have been a close tie, had Colchester's first three games not tied up the match early on.
The first two games produced quick victories, with John Dornan beating Bury's Norman Salmon six and four, while Adam Harper had a seven and five win against Fergus O'Callaghan.
Tom Rothery sealed Colchester's next point with a four and two win against Bury team captain Alan Garnett, releasing the pressure on Colchester's team captain Dick Bokenham and Steve Wynne. Their matches proved to be close games and the Bury players won both one-up, but the final match score was 3-2 to Colchester.
RESULTS: Monthly Stableford: Division one: 1 Jonny Hassett 41 pts, 2 Keith Jacobs 35 pts, 3 Bill Tweddle 33 pts. Division two: 1 Terry Barfield 37 pts, 2 David Barnes 36 pts, 3 Dave Humberstone 35 pts.
