COLCHESTER Rovers' Malcolm Hargreaves has been nationally honoured for services to cycle racing.

Hargreaves, from Marks Tey, was presented with the British Cycling Volunteer Award at the BCF prizegiving dinner at Bolton's Reebok Stadium and is best known locally for organising the prestigious Jock Wadley Road Race.

Meanwhile, Mike Smith won Rovers' first time trial of 2008.

Riding in the Medium Gear 25 at Little Bentley, he returned a successful one hour ten minutes and 48 seconds, but the ride of the morning came from Ed Spurgeon. The oldest rider in the race, he finished runner-up in 1h 14m 39s, with Neil Watts close behind.

In the two-up event, Jim Reed and Dennis Warner produced a winning 1h 04m 23s, while Ken and Julie Baker were second in 1h 05m 36s.

Those pursuing included Tim Warner/Ashley Thomas, Doug Williams/Adrian Manley and Colin White/Chris Hall.
