KANEESHA Johnson put in another spirited display in the National England Athletics Under-17 Women's Combined Events Championships at Sheffield to take the silver medal with a score of 3,474 points.

The Colchester Harriers starlet started the pentathlon well, finishing fourth in the 60m hurdles, in a time of 9.04 seconds in a very fast and hotly-contested race.

Her high jump of 1.62 metres, was consistent, but there were some exceptional results in the event - one of the competitors achieved a new personal best by 12cm - which stopped Johnson moving up the leaderboard.

The shot putt saw a throw of 8.70m, placing her second, but she had problems getting her run-up right in the long jump, which left her with a mammoth task going into the 800m race.

She trailed the leader by 47points, but was undeterred and ran a superb race, finishing three and a half seconds ahead of the leading athlete.

Having watched her sprint off and gain a large lead, Johnson calmly pulled herself to the front to win the race in 2minutes 24.22 seconds.

Unfortunately, this was not enough to regain the overall lead in the competition and Johnson had to settle for silver, by the small margin of four points.
