BRANTHAM Athletic goal king George Clarke fancies his side's chances against whoever they are paired with in today’s FA Cup draw.

The Imps are set to discover their second qualifying round opponents early this afternoon after putting their name in the hat following a 1-0 victory against Spalding United on Saturday.

Clarke scored their winning goal, continuing his free-scoring start to the season, and helped create a slice of club history as this is the furthest Brantham have ever gone in the FA Cup.

In the process, they pocketed prize money to the tune of £6,000.

“The money is fantastic for the club and it’s great for us players, because we’re a very tight bunch,” said Clarke.

“On our day, we can beat anyone.

“We feel we can keep our run going and we’re not afraid of anyone.

“Spalding play at a higher level than us but none of us feared them.

“We know what we’re capable of.

"There’s not much difference between us and other sides and hopefully we can prove that again in the next round.

“Saturday’s result was a massive one for the club and nice to set a new record, in terms of how far the club have gone in the FA Cup.

“We knew that before the game and it had been in our heads all week that we could create history.

“In a sense I can’t believe we’ve done it but on the other hand, I can believe it because I know how good a side we are.

“We weren’t amazing but dug deep and fortunately got an all-important goal.”

Clarke grew up in Brantham, still lives near the ground and was cheered on by various family members during Saturday’s success.

He admitted the victory was extra special because of affinity with the Leisure Centre side.

“It was a great feeling to get the winning goal,” added the 22-year-old, who joined just before Christmas after year a half on the sidelines, following two ankle injuries.

“I’ve been playing well and scoring goals and it was nice to keep the run going.

“Chances were always going to be limited so I knew that when one came my way, I had to take it.

“Fortunately that’s what happened.

“It meant a lot.

“I missed a lot of football because of my injuries and I feel part of this club, having grown up in Brantham.

“I live over the road from the ground and all my family live here so to see the club doing so well is very special.”

Brightlingsea Regent and Heybridge Swifts will also be in today's cup draw, as will Coggeshall Town.

The Seedgrowers have a replay at Berkamsted tomorrow.
