John McGreal said quality set pieces were key to Colchester United toppling promotion-chasing Luton Town this afternoon.

Tom Eastman and Luke Prosser both netted goals from corners in the U's 2-1 victory over the Hatters, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

It saw Colchester claim back-to-back wins in League Two since December and saw them draw to within six points of the play-off positions, with six games remaining.

McGreal said: “The set pieces were of good quality – we keep challenging boys to win games on set pieces and we did that, which is good.

“It was an amazing win and we got the three points that we’ve been desperately trying to get at home, of late.

“We made a brilliant start and we got two set-piece goals.

"We cut through the top of the league team with our approach play.

“Some of our football was fantastic and was pleasing to watch.

“We knew what was going to come in the second half and they did it when they were 2-0 down and got it back to 2-2 at Coventry, a couple of weeks ago.

“But I thought that we were quite resolute and showed good shape – I can’t really think of Sam Walker having a shot or anything to save.

“I was thoroughly pleased and it was a great spectacle for division two, especially with the conditions.

"I've got to mention the fans - I thought that they were terrific.

"I had asked for them to back the team and you couldn't have asked any more from them.

"I thought that they were fantastic and they gave us that brilliant start that we had in the first half."

Colchester's game against Luton was halted after less than two minutes following a horror injury suffered by Hatters midfielder, Luke Berry.

The former Cambridge United was treated for around 11 minutes on the pitch before being taken to Ipswich Hospital with a serious ankle injury.

McGreal added: “We wish Luke Berry well – you could see it was bad from the reaction of both their players and ours.

"It's bitterly disappointing for him because he's been performing to a high standard for them.

"You don't like to see fellow professionals go down with an injury like that so we're hoping that he's OK."
