ESSEX University debutants James Abiwon and Eliandro Goncales experienced mixed fortunes in their first bouts for the club, at the Colchester Amateur Boxing Club show.
Welterweight Abiwon (69 kilogrammes) scored a spectacular second-round knockout victory against Reading University's William Annang.
Abiwon spent the first round settling into the bout, trying to find his range.
This allowed the Reading boxer to nick the first round with his more accurate boxing.
After taking advice from his corner team, Abiwon started putting his straight punches together.
A long left jab found its mark and Annang replied in similar fashion, before he threw an explosive left-right combination that connected right on the button.
Annang dropped in the centre of the ring and the referee did not even take up the count, handing victory to the Essex University boxer.
Light heavyweight Goncales lost a hard-fought bout to 2 Para's Jamie Shelton.
Goncales had a more difficult bout and Shelton stuck to his textbook boxing, scoring often scoring when the Essex University boxer was trying to evade the blows and then bringing himself into distance to try and land his own punches. The second round was a much better round for Goncales, with a heavy right shaking Shelton down to his boots.
Goncales was unable to follow up the punch but brought a new respect from Shelton.
The 2 Para soldier returned to his left jab in the final round and took the verdict, in a really tough opening bout for Goncales.
