OUT to impress.

Colchester United's loan signing Matthew Connolly is bidding to catch the eye of more than one manager this season.

The 19-year-old, who has moved to Layer Road on a season-long loan from Premier League giants Arsenal, will attempt to force his way into U's manager Geraint Williams' plans in pre-season.

And if he can achieve that goal, the promising defender will be out to grab the attention of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Wenger has promised to keep a watchful eye over one of his promising young players, as he attempts to make a name for himself in the Coca-Cola Championship.

And Connolly is well aware that this season will be a crucial one in his fledgling career.

He told the Gazette: "I just want to play as many games as I can for Colchester.

"Arsene Wenger has told me that he wants me to do well for Colchester this season.

"I'm looking forward to the start of the season and impressing the manager in the pre-season games.

"Everyone wants to play against Sheffield United on the first day of the season."
