West Mersea’s Saskia Clark will head to the Rio Olympics in confident mood after striking gold at the Sailing World Cup.

Clark and sailing partner Hannah Mills were victorious with 24 points, as Great Britain claimed a one-two-three in the Women’s 470 event at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

The pair produced an impressive performance in yesterday’s medal race to claim gold and will now head to Rio in just over 50 days’ time in buoyant mood.

Clark said: “We’re really pleased with how we’re progressing.

“It’s great to go into Rio with a few wins but there’s still a lot to do in the next two months.”

The regatta served as final preparation for the Rio Olympics for Clark and Mills and the 2012 silver medallists came up trumps.

The pair went into yesterday’s medal race in a strong position, lying second in the overall standings.

They had recorded finishes of third, fifth and seventh in the opening three races, where a lack of wind resulting in a reduced schedule.

Clark and Mills went into the final day level on points with leaders, Switzerland duo Linda Fahmi and Maja Siegenthaler.

Sunday’s sailing consisted of a sole medal race worth double points and Clark and Mills came out on top of the overall standings, with Great Britain claiming a one-two-three.

Sophie Weguelin and Eilidh McIntyre were runners-up, ahead of third-placed Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter, after both crews finished on 34 points.

Fahmi and Siegenthaler, who had led going into the Medal Race, also assembled 34 points to finish fourth.

Mills added: “We were pretty relieved, to be honest.

“It was a really tough race and an exhausting race but it was just great to get the win.”
