Dominic King is playing a waiting game to see if his race walking heroics in German will be enough to see him on the plane to Rio next year as part of Great Britain’s Olympic team.

The Colchester Harriers ace became the third quickest British man ever over the 50 kilometre race walking distance when setting a time of three hours 59 minutes 22 seconds at the German National Championships in Andenach.

It was enough for him to claim seventh spot in the event and was a big personal best (PB) for the 32-year-old former St Helena School pupil, but was more importantly, well within the 4h 2m time set by British Athletics for racers to qualify for the Rio Olympics next summer.

However, King now faces a wait to see whether it will be enough for the selectors to include him in the team heading to Brazil.

He said: “I have to wait to see what they want me to do.

“Will it be enough to get in the team?

“I hope it will be and I can then prepare for Rio, but I’ll have to wait if they want me to set another time.

“If that’s what they want, then I’ll have to do it, but I feel I can go quicker.

“I had a sickness problem towards the end of the race that cost me time, but I feel I can target three hours 55 (minutes) next time and then I’d like to push on to attack the British record of three hours 51.

“I’m riding a bit of a wave at the moment and I’m really pleased with what I’ve done.

“I knew I was able to do it and I felt close to my best heading into the event, but to actually deliver on the day was great.”

If he is included in Britain’s team, it will be King’s second taste of Olympic action after representing his country at the London Games in 2012.

He is now hoping to attract sponsorship to help his push for the Rio Olympics and would love to get backing from a Colchester company.

He added: “It’s very expensive to have an Olympic campaign and I really need to get backing.

“I’m Colchester born and bred so it would fantastic if any local businesses were seen to be supporting a local boy like that.”

Anyone interested in getting involved with sponsorship can get in touch by emailing the Gazette at gazette.sport@nqe.com and we’ll put them in touch with King.

Dominic’s twin brother, Daniel, is also bidding to book a place at the Rio Olympics but was unable to match his sibling’s result in Germany as he was disqualified at the 34km point and he will have to wait until later in the year for another opportunity to qualify.
