LANGENHOE racer Aaron Head hopes of winning this year’s Caterham Championship were dashed at Oulton Park.
Head needed to win both races at the penultimate weekend of action, in order to be in contention to regain his Championship crown.
The opening race was a competitive affair, with Head among a pack of three drivers that battled away for the entire race distance.
The crowd enjoyed thrilling wheel to wheel action, with the race lead changing hands at least once per lap.
Head timed his final move to the front on the final lap to perfection and defended his lead superbly to the finishing line.
He was victorious after finishing 66 thousandths of a second ahead of Championship leader David Robinson.
The second race initially followed a similar pattern, with the first four drivers racing so close that they could have been covered by a blanket.
As the race approached the final laps, Head was positioning himself for the final burst to the chequered flag.
Unfortunately, the fourth-placed driver forced Head off the track in an over-ambitious manoeuvre.
Head regained his composure but had little time left to recover his position and eventually crossed the line in sixth position.
Head was successful in lodging a post-race protest and was promoted to fifth place.
The offending driver was demoted to sixth place and also received nine penalty points.
But the incident ended Head’s Championship ambitions and his focus will now be to consolidate second place at next month’s final round, at Silverstone.
