Burnley's visit to Layer Road is a game that Colchester United midfielder Kem Izzet would probably rather not remember - even if he could.

It was a dull 90 minutes that failed to ever really get going and the first scoreless game at Layer Road all season will be a forgettable tie from a campaign of highs for the U's.

However, Izzet was left with one memorable imprint from the game - that of the match ball on the top of his head.

The battling midfielder returned to the Colchester starting line-up - at the expense of Johnnie Jackson - having missed the 3-0 defeat at Plymouth through suspension and he literally put his body on the line for the U's cause.

Burnley were awarded a free-kick at the start of the second-half on the edge of the Colchester box and Izzet was in among the U's players in the protective wall.

Joey Gudjonsson's piledriver of a kick flew towards goal, however, the diminutive Izzet stood tall and took the full force on the top of his head.

The impact left him seeing stars and he returned to the fray after some brief treatment to see out the full 90 minutes, but he said later that his recollection of the remainder of the game was rather scant.

"It knocked me clean out," he told the Evening Gazette. "It hit me right on top of the head.

"It was lucky I put my head down as it would have split my nose open if it had hit me square in the face.

"I can't remember anything about the game now."
