THE first of this year’s boarded competitions was held at Playgolf Colchester, which was also another medal counting towards the Order Of Merit.

The Spring Cup has been won by improving golfers for the last few years and was held as a single division.

The cold drying wind and receptive greens were made for a score, with target golf being rewarded.

Scott Wyatt (23) blew the field away with his winning round of nett 63.

He beat his handicap by seven strokes with a gross 86.

The focused display included two great par four birdies, coming on holes eight and 11, then backed up by a pair of back-to-back pars on 13 and 14.

James Wills (17) was two shots off the pace in second place with a nett 65.

Wills can feel very unlucky to meet a better card than his on the day and was left ruing a treble bogey seven, coming on the down-wind par-four 15th.

Wills’ card of gross 82 had highlights of a pair of birdies, coming on the par five second and par four 10th, backed by five pars.

Trevor Hollingsworth (16) completed the top three with a nett 66.

Teenager Cai James (6) carded the lowest gross round of the day with a gross 77.

Dave Needham continued his good form with a win in the senior medal division one.

Needham’s round was highlighted with seven pars to give him a nett 67.

Second place went to Jeremy Dalton on countback, edging Bernard Keyes into third place on countback from Don Miller who also had a nett 71.

Lowest gross of the day went to Robin Kilburn with a nett 84.

Division two winner was Geoffrey Tredgett with a nett 71.

Brian Ruffell was second with nett 72, with David Jones third on nett 74.

The Senior Pairs Medal competition had a Mexican air to the competition when Will Elder and David Jones won with an incredible nett 56.

Second spot went to Jeremy Dalton and Alan Bushe on nett 61 and Alan Cole and Alan Burke were third on nett 63.

The Ladies’ March medal competition was tightly contested.

Ann Longman won division one on countback after Gina Macmillan matched her nett score of 76.

Sue Patrick was a two shots back in third with a nett 78.

Division two saw Lucy Sadler carding a nett 75 to take the victory over Pauline Jordan by a single shot. Shirley Birkin was third with nett 81.

Ann Longman and Nicky Withycombe progressed through to the second round of the Daily Mail Women’s foursomes competition.

They won their away match at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club 2&1 against home pair Dianne Harris and Ann Thomas.
