BEAUTIFUL, sunny conditions greeted the large field for the Playgolf Colchester Par/Bogey competition.

Steve Loran (11) won in division one with the only card with a score being up against the course with a great score of +3. His card included a steady ten pars and nothing worse than a bogey.

James Norton (9) carded a level score to take second place. His card included eight pars and a brace of birdies.

Darren Kerr took third spot after carding seven pars and nothing worse than a bogey for a score of -1.

Countback was needed to decide the top two spots in division two when two in-form players, Joe Cosgrove (13) and Ivan Southernwood (19), both carded scores of +2.

Cosgrove’s better back nine secured him first place. Dave Defreitas (15) took third spot with a card of +1.

Steve Ainley (21) capped a great weekend of golf, after winning his first round of the singles matchplay on Saturday he followed up by winning division three on Sunday with +2.

Second and third place needed countback to separate a quartet of golfers, five shots adrift with scores of -3.

Benjamin Jay (25) took second from Miguel Ruiz (22), leaving Alan Pearman (25) and Brian Williams (21) off the podium in fourth and fifth place.

Playgolf Colchester hosted Clacton in the first round match of the Daily Mail team matchplay competition.

Although Playgolf took early leads in all bar one of the five games, three remained close throughout, meaning the tie was not decided until the result of the final game, giving overall victory to Playgolf Colchester with the scores at 3½ to 1½.

Results for each game (in match order): Rob Wareing beat Peter Hewett 3&2; Lee Kidger lost to Simon Smith 3&2; Alan Cursons halved with Terry Hewitt; Tom Earl beat Keith Sampson 5&4; Ben Cosgrove beat Steve Dow 2&1.

Derek Manister (21) won in a busy division one of the seniors stableford competition with a level handicap score of 36 points.

Jeremy Dalton (20) took the runners-up spot with 35 points, two points ahead of Alan Cole (22) on 33 points.

Brian Ruffell (25) took the honors in division two with 34, three ahead of second-placed John Curd (28), who carded 31.

Geoffrey Tredgett (27) took third spot again this week with 30.

The ladies’ section held a stableford competition on a lovely bright day with a large field turning out to compete.

Judith Peeling recorded the best score to win in division one with her card of 36 points including five pars and a birdie on the par four seventh hole.

Second and third place needed countback when second-placed Sue Patrick and third-placed Rose Cole both recorded 29 points.

Lucy Sadler carded a winning 31 points to take first spot in division two.

Lynne Southgate carded 26 for the runner-up spot.

Shirley Birkin had a better back-nine score to head a list of four with 24-point totals for third place and leaving Catherine Le Tue, Pauline Jordan and Janet Blackmore just out of contention.
