Freddie Sears can break the 20-goal mark for Colchester United this season - providing the U’s continue to carve out goalscoring opportunities.

That’s the view of U’s boss Joe Dunne, after the former West Ham United striker bagged his first goal of the season in their 2-1 defeat at Notts County.

Sears finished as Colchester’s top goalscorer last season with 12 goals, despite having been sidelined for three months of the campaign through injury.

And having started the new season in impressive form the forward has the potential to score regularly, according to Dunne.

Dunne said: “Freddie has got one goal to show for what I think have been tremendous performances.

“He’s played in three different positions, not moaned once and still commanded the work-rate that I ask.

“If we continue creating those kind of chances, he can be a 20-goal-a-season striker for us.

“He scored 12 goals for us last season, even though he missed three months for us.

“He deserved his goal against Notts County but I think we did as a team.”

Hope he does.
I saw Jamie Cureton (24 in season) managed to stay on 92 minutes at Dagenham in their 2-0 win the other day. His Us partner Iwelumo scored for Chester on Saturday and seems to be doing well. Mark Yeates and Ben Williams are with Phil Parkinson at Bradford-it could be a promotion season for them this year.

Really, when did he last achieve that, little more than a Ryman player at best?

Who do you mean by "he"? Obviously not any of the players that Shrubendlad mentions.

Really?? Talk is cheap. No pace, no height, no real trickery, below average finisher at League One level. Evidence suggest that Sears will struggle to get 15 goals (let alone 20!) and he will pick up an injury (ies) during the season. Should have signed Lisbie or Cureton years ago- proven finishers.

There are some good players in the squad and Sears is one of them.
Wordsworth has gone on loan to Rotherham from Ipswich.
Its too late now for Lisbie ,Cureton and Iwelumo but we have missed opportunities over the last few season to bring some of the proven Us players back to the "family". Yes we need young blood and the Academy but you cant put all the eggs in one basket.

If you look Boris my comment was not attached to the one above, Sears will never be as good as Cureton if he lived to be 100!

I hope that there are some new JCs in the squad. When Cureton came on loan we knew we had found something special. The ball seemed to have a homing device linked to the net-going back to Norwich even for £800k was a mistake. And unlike Lua Lua he had the stamina to last 90 minutes.

Having said that we were just Supporters in Terrace 7-Karl and Wayne were on the pitch with him-they know more than us.

Jamie Cureton was the man to get to solve our scoring problems but we just don't seem interested in him. Yes he is old now but he is a proven goal poacher at any level and would score lots of goals - more than Freddie. I hate to say it but he does seem a bit over-rated by some people. I do really hope he proves me wrong. Go for it Freddie and get at least 20! (at least while I am optimistic anyway!) Up the U's!!
