Return - Dan Holman is expected to return from a foot injury for Colchester United in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Colchester United striker Dan Holman is hoping to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly tomorrow, in a bid to be fit for the new League One season.

But any U's move for Darren Ambrose now appears unlikely, after the attacking midfielder featured as a trialist for Championship side Blackpool over the weekend.

Ambrose, a free agent after leaving Greek club Apollon Smyrni at the end of last season, had been training with the U’s and appeared for them in two pre-season friendlies.

However, the former Ipswich Town and Newcastle United star came on as a substitute for Blackpool in their 1-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Burnley, on Saturday.

And yet another 'possible' signing bites the dust. Just like the U's defence and team in general, too ponderous. Such a key signing could have given us the midfield impetus we needed but I guess he is still good enough to cut it at Championship level and therefore, presumably due to not agreeing terms at the U's, he has sought fresh interest elsewhere. Understandable I guess. I just hope we get off to a good start on Saturday but yet again we seem hampered by minor injuries and lack of fitness. It seems that maybe there could be a problem with the methods used to train/keep the players fit. I noticed during the pre-season friendlies that the warm-up routines are much of a muchness, the same old routines used for every game. Nothing changes. Up the U's!
