Former Colchester United captain Brian Wilson has joined their League One rivals Oldham Athletic.

The 31-year-old, who turned down the chance to stay at the U’s last month when he rejected a new contract, has penned a two-year deal with the Latics.

Wilson, who was born in Manchester, had always favoured a return to his native north-west after quitting Colchester.

Wilson knows Oldham manager Lee Johnson from his days at Bristol City, where the pair played together at Ashton Gate.

Well that's a surprise, I don't think! Think Dunne must be having trouble getting in anyone worthwhile as we are clearly uncompetitive on the wage front. More youngsters are not the answer in this case. The geese are getting fat for an awful lot of the bigger teams in league one, whilst we look decidedly skinny

From the area, has family there and good friends with the manager. Not really a shock and wouldn't say its money motivated. Oldham are in a similar position to us and are financing a stadium restructure. He'd been a good servant for the U's and will be hard to replace.

Pipedown, according to Wilson himself, it was because he couldn't agree financial terms that he had to make a move. His wife is pregnant again and there will soon be an extra mouth to feed so it was very much to do about wages initially. Once he realised he had to move then it was always going to be back up to the Manchester area.
