U's fall to defeat at Peterborough

Gazette: U's fall to defeat at Peterborough U's fall to defeat at Peterborough

Colchester United fell to a third successive defeat after losing 2-0 at promotion-chasing Peterborough United.

Goals from Tommy Rowe and Britt Assombalonga gave Posh a deserved victory and left the U's three points above the League One relegation zone, with six games to go.

Dominic Vose volleyed Clinton Morrison’s lofted cross over at the far post early on for Colchester.

But the U’s received a big let-off when Grant McCann’s fine effort came back off the inside of the far post, after the Northern Ireland international had advanced towards the edge of the U’s area.

Morrison then blocked a goalbound effort from close to his own goal-line soon after.

But Colchester eventually fell behind in the 26th minute when Peterborough skipper Tommy Rowe headed home McCann’s corner from six yards.

Peterborough felt they should have had a penalty eight minutes before the break when a powerful shot from former Braintree Town loanee Britt Assombalonga appeared to strike Magnus Okuonghae on the arm in the area.

And Colchester almost fell further behind nine minutes after the break when Danny Swanson dispossessed Ryan Dickson near the U’s area but drilled a low shot wide of the far post.

But Peterborough doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Assombalonga raced through to plant a fine shot past Sam Walker, after Okuonghae's attempted clearance had hit Danny Swanson.

Hope you enjoyed the game NOAH. Sounds like Posh had shooting practice 16 attempts at goal to the U's zero. Glad I stayed at home tonight. Never been more disillusioned with the club than I can ever remember. Obliterated by Cowling and Dunne.

Win against Tranmere? You have to have shots on target to win matches and how many times this season have we failed to get a single shot on goal during 90 mins this season?

That's the trouble with half you lot on here, your so blo-dy fickle. scared to say boo to a goose. Dunne's had his chances and fuc-ked up big time. Got rid of better players than he has brought in. Look at O Toole 16 goals this season. Yes I told both Cowling and Ward what I thought to their faces lat season, and I would tell Dunne exactly the same.

sadly it does look like relegation is a near certainty now, and it's time to start planning for life in League 2. We scraped out of it last year, but it's clear this year that things have got worse, and probably being relegated will give us a chance to regroup. There may be a chance at that level for some of the youngsters to shine, we have to look on the bright side. Whether JD is still in charge remains to be seen - I'm with angryman, some of the comments here are personal, and just plain nasty. All right, express your views but respect the fact that this man has blue & white running through his veins.

Typical; you want to "say it to Joe Dunne's face"; yet didn't even bother to go to the game (our closest away fixture); to seize the opportunity.

I did; and we were simply beaten by a vastly superior side; indeed, the best brick wall defence that we have run into all season. We were brutally too easily knocked of the ball in every area; and the U's very young side was totally exhausted at 90 minutes after a punishing schedule of ten games in 30 days; but they kept trying.

Peterborough’s defence can hardly be called a ‘brick wall’ when they’ve conceded 52 goals so far this season! In fact they looked decidedly shaky at the back; we simply failed to put them under any pressure whatsoever!

Posh never had to advance out of first gear to easily beat an embarrassingly toothless U’s side tonight. Having seen all three games against Peterborough this season, I would say that this was in reality easily their worst performance of the three!

I simply said that by calling joe dunne "pathetic" shows know morales or respect. Even if he was the worst manager in u's history he has still been at the club for 3 decades and the vast majority of that has been a great ambassador, hence why over 10 years after his last game people were still singing "we all dream of a team of joey dunnes"
Yes i will call anyone that slates a man like that a knob. I don't think dunne is the man to take us forward but I know there's a lot worse out there. I think there needs to be a serious re think about the management after the season.
However my main anger is the players and lack of true leaders amongst them.

The dreaded drop can only be achieved this season if the team has the required desire and determination, but quite frankly the last few performances have shown that the very heart has been ripped out of the club. There was absolutely nothing about the game last night that would even hint at this being possible. They looked a group of players resigned to their fate. There was virtually no creation, no shots on target and when combined with the customary defensive mistakes meant there was only going to be one winner. How it didn't turn into a complete rout was a mystery as Posh spurned chance after chance.

The next two games, Tranmere at home and Stevenage away, must be won in my opinion in order to remain a league one club, but anyone seeing the last few performances would predict this as being extremely unlikely.

Super - relegation is an (almost) certainty now because of our run of form, together with the games we have left. If we carry on at this rate (just one win in 10) that's relegation form. Other teams around us, even though inconsistent, are picking up points, and any games in hand have now evaporated, only adding to the minus goals tally. It's as well to be prepared for the future - call it pessimism if you like but it's logical and realistic, and also helps to soften the blow come the summer, because it hurts to go down.

By then you will have around 2000 coming through the gate tops. Lets hope Tranmere are beatable!
