U's suffer heavy home defeat against lowly Notts County

Gazette: Disappointing day - for U's boss Joe Dunne Disappointing day - for U's boss Joe Dunne

Lacklustre Colchester United fell to a hugely disappointing 4-0 home defeat at the hands of lowly Notts County this afternoon.

The U's started brightly, with Clinton Morrison and Alex Gilbey both denied by Magpies keeper Bartosz Bialkowski early on.

But Notts County went ahead just before the half hour through Jack Grealish, who converted from Jamal Campbell-Ryce's low cross.

And the visitors' lead was doubled just before half-time when Morgan Fox netted from close range following Callum Ball's delivery.

Colchester tried hard to get back into the game in the second half and Macauley Bonne came close to scoring.

But after Grealish struck the post for the visitors, Callum McGregor scored a third for the visitors with a sweet strike, with three minutes remaining.

And Gary Liddle wrapped up an emphatic win for the visitors two minutes later, to condemn Colchester to a heavy home defeat.

For a full match report, pictures and reaction to Colchester's game with Notts County, see Monday's Gazette.

What a pathetic bunch of losers. Serious questions have to be asked of the manager, he had 2 weeks to prepare for this match at home against the team that are bottom of the league. The players are simply not good enough, and clearly Joe Dunne and his staff ain't either. Relegation is a certainty unless something drastic is done. Absolute embarrassment today.

Cowling is to blame full and square. Crap, cheep-skate option of a manager appointed from the assistant role for the third time under Cowling. First Williams (who more or less took us down from the Championship), then useless Ward who was so bad it stopped me going to games and then Dunne. Enough said!!

Embarrassing having to wait for ages for bus to ground. Embarrassing getting to ground with only about 1/4 full of home fans. Embarrassing losing 4.0 at home to team bottom of the league.
A whole new approach is needed for the club which has been in a 5 year decline.

Think you seem to have forgotten the "Big/Expensive Names" - Lambert and then Hoofroyd......!
I'm certainly not going to defend today's performance but I'm afraid we are currently just about a League One side and were 'spoilt' by two amazing seasons under Phil Parkinson and then Gerraint Williams. The latter was unfortunate to lose some excellent players who went on to play in the Premiership and I for one certainly don't blame him for our subsequent relegation.
Anyway back to the present. Joe has blooded new talent this season and everyone has to be grateful for that but unfortunately the new younger members of the team need experienced heads around them. The midfield needs a 'Kevin Watson' and the defence needs a 'Wayne Brown' - you only have to look at the difference Mark Taylor made to Magnus in a very short space of time to understand the benefit of experience in adversity. My only criticism of Joe is the decision to let Kem Izzett go - at the moment we could do with his commitment and effort!
Off to drown my sorrows - Up the U's!!

WHAT

What the HELL was that?! We were utterly pathetic and totally gutless from start to finish. It’s patently obvious that the players are not even giving 50% to the cause let alone their all, instead of even the vaguest notion of a performance that a deluded Dunne predicted they subjected us to what can only be described as a lackadaisical malaise. Chasing shadows against a side that had only managed TWO points from their ten away games prior to today, is a new low point at the godforsaken soulless hole that is Community Stadium!

There’s no two ways about it we are in deep relegation trouble, even worse off points wise than this time last season and closer to the drop zone. Dunne has had his chance and has regrettably failed; it’s evident he cannot motivate, nor command the respect of, his charges and is tactically incompetent and has run out of ideas. It’s high time for a change.

Cowling must sack Joe Dunne IMMEDIATELY!

Again no passion and no ideas. Joe Dunne has to resign for the sake of Colchester United and all the backroom staff that worked under Ward need to leave as well. We need a Manager with no connection to the club whatsoever and Mr. Cowling has to make up his mind as to whether he is going to bring this club forward as a business or just sit back and watch us go into obscurity.

Jonathan Crisp promised us so much and look where we ended up with him at the helm and I can see it happening again under Cowling unless he gets hold of this club and shows all of us he does want us to succeed by actually sacking Dunne if he fails to resign and bring in a proven Manager from outside asap before we become League Two fodder.

P.S. Mr Cowling - Please listen this time to your fans! You need to get rid asap and bring in someone completely unknown to Colchester from outside who can get this demotivated, humiliating bunch to perform. You also need to consider them having one hell of a good clear out of backroom and playing staff! I have never felt this way about Colchester United before. It was bad before but this is the worst I have ever felt - surely even the most ardent of Dunne supporters can see now that he is a lost cause!

A few of us on this site were right regards both Boothroyd and Ward. We got criticism as being negative for making any form of comment regards them not being up to the job.Looks like were right looking at the present Div 2 league table. I think we have been right again this season after todays display. As another blog mentioned the club has to many aquanticieces of former players. It needs clearing out and a fresh face brought in. Plenty of good managers in the lower leagues.

These are brave words, but it is not our club, it is Cowling's club. He will decide. What is his fiendish plan for the club? It looks as if he hasn't got one, but I expect he has.
And as for the players, they all have contracts, which the club has to honour, so they can't be sacked. Thery are the same p\ayers who beat MK Dons not long ago. They could play to win if they wanted to, but it looks as if they are purposely playing badly to get their gaffer sacked. We saw that happen in the final few weeks of several previous managers - Geraint Williams and John Ward spring to mind.

After that atrocious attempt at trying to play football yesterday, coupled with what supporters have had to put up with for several seasons now, I am at the point of wondering why should I bother any longer because, after all, it's patently obvious the chairman doesn't give a monkeys. It's also vividly clear that the players are no longer responding to Dunne and Kinsella. What the hell have they been up to in the last two weeks? Where has all the "hard work" they are supposed to have put in gone because, quite frankly, it looked like they hadn't touched a football in weeks. There was absolutely nothing supporters could take from the game to give any hope that relegation can be averted. There's no money to make changes in the January transfer window and, even if there were, Dunne and Kinsella are not going to turn it round. It now looks a hopeless cause with league 2 beckoning for next season and heaven forbid after that. I'm certainly not going to ruin my Christmas by going to watch Stevenage give us another thrashing on Boxing day, and I'm sure I won't be the only one.

Awful performance, set up completely wrong with the emphasis on direct football and set pieces (throw ins preferably). Tozer (a CB) was obliterated at RB by their wingers and we continued to sit off Campbell Ryce giving him time to turn and run at us where he is most dangerous.

I thought that Dunne's philosophy was actually playing football, passing the ball around in quick movements so what really baffles me is to why he played a different way against "the worst team in the league"

I will be attending the Stevenage game with the hope of a swift turnaround, which would not surprise me due to our sudden changes in consistency. Nonetheless difficult times calls for supporters to stick behind the team through thick and thin as i'm sure many of us have done before.

We are sailing in choppy waters, lets not try to sink the ship further.

You've hit the nail on the head Brig 1, Mr Cowling doesn't care enough. He would prefer to stay up but, if it means we go down, so be it. He is not prepared to change his plans and he has already told us that last season. Long term I can't honestly see us being able to remain a league club under his tenure unless he has a change of heart. Playing Bonne out wide in a team as bad as it was yesterday could ruin the lads whole career, Gilbey's too. Cowling is now in charge of a complete and utter shambles.

Baz I agree with you regards to the youngsters, Bonne was left on his own to protect the whole of the right flank because Tozer was totally ineffective. Also what must Bonne have thought of Morrison, a guy he has said in previous interviews he looks up to, to have to pull him away from another player when things got heated to stop him from being booked or worse sent off.

Desperation clearly set in when Dunne bought Bond on who is a player who is at best League two material shows Dunne doesn't have a clue how t turn this around.

Anyone who believes, Massey, Sears and Watt will save the day once fit are clearly deluded.

With Cowling running the show, its League Two here we come as it will be total freefall unless Dunne does the right thing and leave his beloved Col U.

what a dire performance, one of the games where everyone comes out and says "that was the worst game i've ever seen and i've been going for ... years". Personally I felt sorry for the likes of Turgott, his confidence in his colleagues was shot to pieces before he came on. I wonder how much longer we will be able to get the talented youth players from top sides in when we struggle to pass the ball effectively and show killer instinct. Somehow I felt Magnus was not particularly bothered by his miss and I'd agree with the Hungry Student that the playing style was all wrong. I would have relished being a fly on the wall in that dressing room at fulltime. Has Dunne given up on his style all together of quick pass and move football with patient build up. I struggled to understand bringing Bond on, surely Vose or Sanderson would have been more appropriate (the ones with a future). I heard someone say yesterday who do you reckon they'll give man of the match, I nearly turned round and said Morrison at least he gives them a shove when we are being bullied. Still I'm a bit reluctant to judge when so many are injured and believe we have done well recently with the circumstances

I don't believe in kicking a dog while its down, far from it. Okay things are far from perfect and we are all entitled to make our feelings known. The man is only human and has stuck with his principles which have sadly backfired in his face. Believe me in any form of management, you have to make decisions in your own mind which you think best. Mistakes are made from which you learn. Personally I've seen them unfold in his tenure. Joe still being a young manager will learn very fast that mistakes can be costly. His vision for the way he wants his team to play in his prerogative. Right now he wants a firm arm around him to give him good advice and support. Big decisions now need to be made. Forget friendship it wont work Joe. You need a new number two with different views from your self to bring in fresh ideas. The saying is to many cooks spoil the broth so ditch a few heads on the coaching staff. Money must be made available in the January transfer window to bring in two older experienced players, not signing players that are worse than we already have. Tomorrow will possibly shed more light of any news that Mr Cowling has held any meetings with Joe over the weekend. I am far from happy with the displays but I'm in the minority that I still believe things can be turned around.

The worst thing about it is all we have had since the game is thd assistant manger having post match interview. We have been beaten 4.0 at home to bottom of the league, and it's not a one off, we've been hammered at home lots in past couple of years. Why two days after has the manager or chairman not made a statement, or even apologised!
Or is it that we should just hand over the cash and expect to be embarrassed.

Well, that was the worst performance I have seen in many years. Outplayed from the start with yet another abysmal team selection- Bonne is overrated and out of his depth for League One football. Does the management and staff want to be in this League and fight or go down to League Two and be involved in another relegation battle. I can see us doing a Darlington- have a brand new stadium with decent players and get relegated all the way down to Non League football. With Dunne in charge we have no ambition, fight or passion. I can only say the same for Cowling and I have felt like this for a long time- it’s about time people realised he is no good and out of his depth as a League One manager. Jabo, again, was the only player showing any effort. Tozer who was supposed to be a great player with potential was a player who lacked any natural ability for the game. Gilbey has turned arrogant and cracks are now appearing in his game. Morrison is never ever a League One footballer, his legs are gone and all he does is fall over, moan, gets booked and goes home and laughs at how much he is being paid for that. No player is taking the lead or commanding anyone. Where is the attacking football we were promised? There were hardly any chances created and the chances we did have were wasted. We just don’t exploit teams to their weaknesses and the formation just isn’t working at all, Jabo is isolated and Morrison shows no support as he’s on the floor for 80 minutes of the game, then he gets substituted. Get out Dunne!!!!!!!
