Mel Hughes is celebrating an innings like no other after reaching 1,000 games not out.

The evergreen West Mersea CC cricketer achieved the outstanding milestone, after playing in the club’s second XI eight-wicket defeat against Great Braxted and Tiptree.

Loyal Hughes, the club’s record appearance-maker, has been turning out for West Mersea over a period spanning an incredible 46 years, scoring 14,500 runs in that time.

The wicket-keeper has also claimed more than 500 catches and made more than 120 stumpings, during his many years with the Islanders.

Hughes, 65, was presented with a commemorative cap and scrapbook in recognition of his achievement, following the Piri Piri North Essex League game at the Glebe.

Hughes said: “It was quite an emotional day and one that I’ll certainly remember."
