Dunne - U's performance was not good enough

Colchester United manager Joe Dunne made no excuses for his side after they were beaten 2-0 at home by Oldham Athletic.

The U’s have now lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions and lie just four points above the relegation zone in League One, following their latest setback.

Goals from Jean-Yves M’Voto and a Brian Wilson own goal gave the Latics a well-deserved victory, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Dunne said: “It wasn’t good enough and it was very disappointing, especially as we had two weeks without a game prior to it.

“They had a bit of break from it but we didn’t pass it well enough.

“We changed it at half-time and went to 4-4-2 and I asked them to be brave but I don’t think that worked, either.

“We conceded a freak goal and it’s probably one that’s going to be shown over and over again and we’re going to be laughed at.

“The keeper made a good save but there were slow reactions and it was like it went in in slow motion.

“Nobody seemed to take responsibility to get to it and it’s in the back of the net.”

Going down without a doubt. I knew I shouldnt have got excited abbout the posiitive results when Dunne was first appointed. We needed someone from the outside to come in not the Assistant stepping up. In big trouble now.

We have good players but they are not being used. John White, not even on the subs bench. Carl Pentney, on the payroll, by all accounts very good, but has never had a game.

When the defence has been so poor all season (minus about 4 games) and with a centre back on loan why has he not been playing, I hope dunne has got wards horrible habit of signing blokes on loan and never playing them.
Bournemouths going to be a very hard game and Walsall is a 6 pointer.

With the exception of 45 minutes at Orient, I have seen only very poor performances under Dunne and Kinsella. Chelmsford, Notts County, Coventry, MK Dons and Oldham and with the evidence of those games, we will definitely be relegated with these two inexperienced and naive individuals at the helm. More worrying still was Dunne's post match interview on BBC Essex which clearly indicates his complete lack of man management skills. Far from being motivational, his words will serve to further deflate a team already completely devoid of confidence and direction. When a manager starts asking his players to do ridiculous things such as Henderson standing in front of the dug at opposition corners, you know we are in trouble. Reminded me of Roger Brown's corner huddle. If they're spending time working on things like that when the wheels are clearly off, we're in big trouble.

Henderson standing in front of the dug out; with another U's forward on the opposite touchline; for opposition corners; is a brilliant tactic. This was first expolited by Portsmouth when they were a premiership side, and it did work superbly in Joe's first few matches. It forces the opposition to have three defenders back rather than one. That must reduce the odds of a defender scoring against us from a set piece. Also helps unclutter our box, and with a competent keeper that had aerial command of his box and decent defenders, this tactic should also help us clear our lines. However, on the clearance of the ball, we are then fast into a passing counter attack. Clever!.

Let's please respect that Joe is trying ambitious new things, including playing an attractive passing game which John Ward's legacy squad evidently can't handle too well. However, devoid of our injured Arsenal loanees that can pass, find space and pass again, Joe reverted to 4-4-2 in the second half; tried two younger players, and also a Morrison and Ibrehe combination. All of these options have been suggested in the blogs of this paper in the last two weeks. Short of lacing up his own boots, what else can he do until he can refresh the squad in the transfer window?

As for Joe "demotivating the squad with his man management", where is the evidence? Frankly, the Alex Ferguson 'hairdryer' treatment never hurt anybody at Old Trafford. Without competition for places, and a few pricked egos and kicked backsides, we are never going to improve.

We should judge things after the transfer window, but bear in mind that Joe does need to sell to reduce wages before he can buy under FL rules. What we really need is for this town to properly get behind its club,and raise the gate revenues so that we can do things.

Could be a good idea to sort out some of the basics before thinking about "brilliant tactics". The defence continues to be a shambles but thank goodness for the man in front of the dug out. Please don't even think about comparing Fergie and Joe Dunne. Fergie is a proven genius and a manager of men par excellence. Dunne is a novice who publicly stated that the player who failed to pick up M'voto for the first goal was the same player that was on him all game "but I'm not going to name names". That's pretty obvious then and must be devastating for the young man to be publicly identified and slated by his manager "I asked them if they were a three loan player team" is going to do absolutely nothing for their confidence. I have my tickets for the two Christmas games and I hope that many others will do the same. However, it should surprise no-one that less than 3,000 turned up yesterday. If a cinema regularly shows poor films, what do you think will happen to its ticket sales?

There are also players that publically announce that they are too good for the U's; and decide to leave; only to then come back like some prodigal son when nobody else wants them; just when the transfer window is about to close; and then hold the club to ransom and demand high wages and a long term contract.

Then they don't deliver to contract performance expectation, fail to follow strict management instructions, and lose concentration at critical moments whereby had they been a pilot ,the plane would have crashed. They hence let down their team mates, the fans and the wider business that is Colchester United.

If I didn't perform (and no I don't work for the club), I might get instantly dismissed for similar misdemeanors and if very lucky, enjoy perhaps a month's money before the dole. Most players have astute agents, and some have egos to match. If they make it, they will become very rich. In the meanwhile, they have the protection of guaranteed wages whether they don't play, don't perform or are injured.

I wholly agree that if a cinema or radio station kept showing poor films or playing duff music, it's popularity and takings would drop. That's why they don't ever commit to take the entire output of one single producer for three years. There are plenty of one hit wonders and failed actors. However, few footballers will work on a match by match basis (nor should they).

If soccer players want to avoid being accountable to the public, who pay their wages, they should never have chosen to pursue professional/celebri
ty status and any dream of playing in the premier league or championship.

The U's Academy (investment £1.25M per annum) and later the First Team is a potential route to stardom and huge player rewards, albeit that it is tough and less rewarding when in the lower tiers. If they shed tears now when justifiably criticised, do they have the mental toughness to do it day in and day out in front of 50,000 critics and the red-top newspapers in the top echelons? This isn't parks football nor kids where, I do agree, a manager does have to be more empathetic and caring. These are professionals.

Surely they could hear what the crowd was saying, so it isn't exactly a shock to again hear the same again from Joe? Frankly, I am glad that Joe Dunne is now talking tough, as most on display yesterday do deserve a public tounge lashing. WE buy the tickets, WE pay their wages. We demand better. Joe, please tell them that. Up the U's and let's back Joe Dunne and stop winging about managers and put some blame on players.

It was clear to see (Especially from their second goal which was a huge embrassement) that we lack communication in the team. Cousins just stood there and didn't even tell Brian where the ball was. It was like a childrens play with the crowd shouting "It's behind you!"

We have defensive problems that fact is clear, with Magnus struggling big time. We need a central defensive midfield who can help out the defense Bond or Wordsworth were non-existant.

The main reason that cousins was always second fiddle before was that he was to quiet, he's a good shot stopper but he needs to command the defence better. Shame we let Baldwin go, never great but I'd rather have him and white in the team then any of the current 4. Also seems weird to me why rose isn't playing. He seems to be the only current member of the back four that likes having the ball, he's main fault is the defensive part of his game which he has started to improve.

There are some very simple basics just not being got right. Note the angle U's defenders stand at for balls into the box. Instead of being in a position to attack the ball and clear, defenders are looking towards their own goal, so at best balls are being cleared for a corner. Why oh why are League 1 players so naive? And why aren't such failings being picked up by the coaching staff?

Quite frankly, I think you've got players who wouldn't get into my beloved Chelmsford City team right now. I certainly wouldn't swap our centre half Kenny Clark for Magnus.

In terms of defenders, I wouldn't be as harsh as most people suggest. Eastman is pretty good, and will be a top notch defender, it's just the players around him. Why did Dunne sign Potts? Coker is by far a better player, or even White, as we currently need defensive minded players that will boost the midfield to perform. Magnus needs to be dropped and we need to play the player from Pompy or even Nkumu from a premiership side. Why is John-Joe O'Toole dropped, I keep thinking that an O'Toole/Bean partnership would scare most teams in the league. I like Ladapo too, and feel that his pace and skill would be deadly up front in a 442, with Sears and Massey down the wings. In this case drop Morrison and ofcourse that idiot that wants to leave - what's his name... Oh yeah Wordsworth.
