A busy train station missed out on the possibility of having lifts installed after no-one nominated it for funding.

Peter McFarlane, 88, of Burnham High Street, has called for better services for the elderly and disabled travelling from the Dengie into the capital.

He says the “glaring problem” is a lack of lifts at the Wickford where passengers are often expected to change trains.

Mr McFarlane said: “Normally I just don’t go to London.

“I have given up.

A Department of Transport spokesman said: “As Wickford was not nominated by either Abellio Greater Anglia or Network Rail, it could not be considered for improvements.

“However, we are committed to improving accessibility across the rail network, and if further funding becomes available, we will consider adding more stations to the scheme.”
