A WARNING sign for a school which closed 46 years ago and bus stops put in the middle of the pavements have left villagers baffled.

In the past week, new bus stops have been installed in Lawford.

But on two sites the posts have been sited in the centre of the pavement, blocking the way past for prams and wheelchairs.

Long Road resident Ian Robertson raised the issue at Monday's Lawford Parish Council meeting.

He said: "Bus stops have been put up a few days ago in Long Road and Wignall Street on the pavement - right in the middle of the pavement.

Council chairman Alan Coley has called for urgent action branding the bus stop signs as "rediculous".

Residents have also been left scratching their heads after a brand new sign was put up in Wignall Street warning drivers they are approaching a school.

But Lawford's primary school in Wignall Street closed in 1969 - having been replaced by a new facility in Long Road.

Lawford's highways committee chairman, Lesley Pallett said: "The previous sign was taken away after years of requests but a new one has been put up.

"It's rediculous."

n An Essex Highways spokesman said the bus stops copled with the criteria and said the school sign is meant to warn drivers of Lawford Primary School - half a mile away in Long Road.
