A HORSE was rescued after it fell into a ditch and got stuck.

Three engines and one appliance from the Animal Rescue Unit rushed to the aid of the animal, which was trapped in three feet of water in Nunnery Street, Castle Hedingham, at around 2pm on Sunday.

The horse, named Florence, is two years old, and although it is unclear how she fell into the river, she was unable to get out on her own.

Essex firefighters worked with crews from Suffolk Fire Service to help release the trapped filly.

They used specialist equipment from the Animal Rescue Unit and by working together, managed to pull the horse to safety.

An Essex Fire Service spokesman said: "Crews worked with the owner and vet throughout the rescue to ensure the horse stayed calm.

"Although exhausted by the ordeal, Florence is recovering with a well earned snack of hay.

"She was rescued by 16:20pm and left in the care of it's owner and vet."
