A giant wind turbine could soon appear on Colchester's skyline.
Energy companies are to be invited by Colchester Council to propose schemes to build one or more turbines, up to 120 metres high, on land north of the A12, near the town's new Community Stadium.
Up to two megawatts, or two million watts, of power could be generated, which could then either be used to power the new stadium, council offices or nearby housing developments, with extra power sold on at market rates.
Nigel Chapman, Colchester Council's cabinet member for sustainability, said it was early days for the "exciting" scheme and suggested the turbine would not look out of place in the surrounding area.
"We have got to work out the right place to put it, so there is a lot of preliminary work that needs to be done," he said.
"It would be a good site for one. Personally, I find them quite exciting. I think it would be a great thing for Colchester."
