THE elderly driver of a car which veered off the road and killed teenager has died.

Cassie McCord, 16, from Drury Road, suffered serious head injuries in the crash, which happened outside H&M, in Head Street, on February 7.

Colin Horsfall, 87, of Rowhedge, who was thought to have been taken ill at the wheel before the incident, died on Friday.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “The elderly man taken to hospital following the crash that killed Cassie McCord has passed away in a care home.

“Mr Horsfall was driving a Vauxhall car that left the road and mounted the pavement, injuring three girls, one of them fatally.

“Police investigating the crash are continuing to prepare a report for HM Coroner for the inquest hearing, which will be held in due course.

“The McCord family and several witnesses have been informed by police of the man's death.”

Police previously said Mr Horsfall would not be questioned until he was well enough to do so.

Following the incident it emerged that Mr Horsfall had been involved in an accident at a petrol station just days earlier and was set to have his licence revoked.

But he was still able to get behind the wheel on his red Vauxhall Astra the day of the fatal collision as he had not yet received the notice from the DVLA.

Mr Horsfall was taken to Colchester General Hospital following the crash, where his condition was initially said to be stable and improving.

Cassie, a Colchester Sixth Form College student, was taken to Queen’s Hospital, in Romford, but her life-support machine was switched off on February 9.

Following a funeral service, Cassie’s family said they found some comfort in the fact the lives of others have been improved by her wish to be an organ donor.
