ROYAL jam makers Wilkin and Sons celebrated the grand opening of their latest 'Tiptree' tea room.
The Batte-Lay has opened at the Minories art gallery in Colchester - adding to the famous firm’s portfolio of seven other tea rooms.
Guests saw the refurbished tea room as Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell unveiled a painting by Colchester artist Roy Cleary entitled The Tiptree Cherry Picker, which he donated to the tea room.
The painting was based on a photograph taken in a Tiptree orchard in the early 1900s.
Ian Thurgood, joint managing director of Wilkin and Sons, said: “The Minories art gallery’s strong cultural significance for the town makes it an outstanding location for a traditional tea room.
“The Batte-Lay is situated in the grounds of the gallery just a short walk from the town centre and has proven to be an immediate success with townspeople."
