A 52-year-old man from Frinton was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
Armed police searched Lawford last night after reports that a man with a shotgun was roaming the village.
Police were called to Station Road at 6.15pm yesterday and a helicopter aided the search.
The man was released on police bail until Friday pending further enquiries.
