A mother-of-five is stepping into the ring after fighting back from potentially life-changing injuries suffered in a horrific horse riding accident.

Kerry Tyrrell, 36, of Braintree, suffered multiple fractures to her pelvis as well as a break to the lower part of her spine whilst she was competing at a country show in April 2015.

Ms Tyrrell said: “I remember the whole thing. I knew it was bad instantly because when I initially hit the floor I felt something at the bottom of my back pop and I couldn’t feel my lower half.

“Everything seem to move in slow motion. It was the most horrific pain and something I will never forget.”

Ms Tyrell’s rehabilitation was slow. She was initially bedbound and unable to look after her children Brioney, 19, Harley, 15, Mason, 13, Brooklyn, 9, and Harmony, 6.

But she fought her way back from the brink, and has now even been able to take up her beloved hobby of horse riding again.

She said: “I pushed myself to go back to work too quickly and couldn’t handle it.

“With everything I was going through I ended up in debt and I couldn’t get any help.

"I ended up selling my house and I was homeless and lived in a caravan for six months.

“But I just pushed myself to get better as soon as possible because I saw everything was falling apart around me -it was through sheer determination.

“When you are in that situation where you don’t know if you’ll be able to walk again you realise how lucky you are when you get through it.

“Most of the time before my accident I used to get in my car and drive everywhere, even if it was five minutes down the road, but now I appreciate things more.”

The support worker is now set to enter the ring as part of an Ultra White Collar Boxing event at Chelmsford’s Evoke nightclub on November 26, raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Ms Tyrrell said: “My grandad suffered from lung cancer and passed away of motor neurone disease. His funeral was the day after my accident so I couldn't be there.

"He used to be a boxer when he was younger so I feel like in a way I am doing this for him.

"The boxing has given me so much, my confidence has grown. It has made me realise that I have got so much fight in me.”
