A woman who lost her brother to cancer organised a Christmas Fair which raised more than £1,000 for the hospice where he spent his final days.

Lisa Clay, 46, rallied round stallholders and attracted more than 150 people to her fair at Benton Hall Golf and Country Club, which was in aid of Havens Hospices.

Her brother, Darren Roe, 48, died on Mother’s Day last year at the Havens Hospice in Westcliff-On-Sea, just six months after he found out he had terminal stomach cancer.

Mrs Clay, who works on reception at the golf club on Wickham Hill, Witham, ran the cake stall at the event, with the help of her husband, Steve, and parents, Brian and Pam Roe, who flew over from their home in Tenerife.

Visitors bought early Christmas gifts including handmade jewellery, crafts, chocolate, cards and beauty products and won prizes provided by businesses in Witham.

Mrs Clay said: "People seemed to be coming through and through all the way between 10am and 3pm.

"Everyone has been so wonderful.

"I just want to say a really big well done to everyone involved and to Benton Hall for letting me hold the event here."

She added: "My brother wasn’t at the hospice long but they were brilliant to us as a family.

"Havens Hospices are brilliant. My brother was too far along to appreciate it but they were just there, and offered support to us and to my sister-in-law."

Mrs Clay, of Pantile Close, Witham, also paid tribute to her brother, who she described as "a charmer" and someone who loved his job as a stallholder at Rayleigh Lanes market.

She said: "It was fitting to have all the stalls here because of his job.

"He was such a loss to us, it was devastating.

"He was full of life, he enjoyed life and he loved his disco dancing and he played golf.

"He’s got two grown-up daughters, Holly and Ellis, and he was a charmer - just such a lovely person."
