Traders and retailers have welcomed revived plans to bring Braintree’s market into the High Street.

Braintree Council is looking into closing the road on market days - Saturday and Wednesday - and relocating the stalls for a trial run.

A previous bid to ban traffic for 18 months in 2010 failed after bus company First said it would have a detrimental impact on its services in the High Street.

Chris Siddall, Braintree Council cabinet member for prosperity and growth, said: “One of the proposals being developed is a trial closure of Braintree High Street on market days and the relocation of the market to the High Street.

“The impact of this would obviously need to be trialled before any final decision is made on how to proceed.”
