<li> All five teenagers arrested on suspicion of stabbing Jay Whiston, 17, to death in Colchester have been released on police bail until October 17.

  • Tuesday 5pm: Police arrests a sixth suspect, a boy aged 17, on suspicion of murder.

     

    Also, the boy, 17, arrested on suspicion of assault yesterday has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

    A boy, 17, arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of muder was released without charge yesterday.

    It means police are now questioning five teenagers.

     

    • Tuesday 9am: A fifth person has been arrested.

       

      A 17-year-old from Colchester has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

      One of the four Colchester teenagers arrested on suspicion of murder has also been released without charge.

      The others are still being questioned by police.

      • Monday 6.50pm: Detectives have been given an extra 36 hours to question three teenagers arrested on Saturday night on suspicion of killing Jay Whiston.

         

        Police would have exceeded the 24-hour custody limit and been forced to release them tonight has they not applied for the extensions, granted by a superintendent.

        • Monday 4.30pm: Stafford Whiston, Jay's dad, describes his son as his hero. He said: "If you could pick a son you would pick him."

           

           

          • Monday 3pm: Family who hosted the party speak about their devastation after the party ended in tragedy.

             

            • Monday 2pm: Jay's dad Stafford Whiston and stepmum Debbie Whiston have visited Marlowe Way, where Jay was stabbed on Sunday.

            The couple laid flowers outside the house, where friends have been paying their respects to the 17-year-old since the incident.

            • Monday 1.30pm: Jay’s grandma Shirley Whiston and granddad David Whiston have described the pain they are suffering.
               

               

              Shirley, of Holland Road, Little Clacton, said: "All I can see is him lying on the slab at the mortuary. Now I will never see him again."

               

              • Monday 10am: Detectives have set up a dedicated number for witnesses to call - 01245 452882.

                 

                 

              • Monday 8am: Police reveal at fourth teenager, a 17-year-old boy from Colchester, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday night.

                 

                His arrest brings the total to four. Two 18-year-old men and another 17-year-old boy, all from Colchester, are still in custody. 

                • Sunday 7.30pm: Jay's mum Caroline Shearer, of Aster Close, Clacton, has described her son as kind, considerate, clever and intelligent.

                   

                  He had just started studying A-levels in law and business at Tendring Technology College in Frinton.

                  Jay, who worked part time at dad Stafford Whiston’s pawnbrokers in Queen Street, Colchester, dreamt of running his own business.
                   

                  He had a sister, Holly Fairburn, 24, two half brothers, Lee, 16, and Taylor, seven, a step brother, Lee, 36, and a step sister, Mary, 32.

                  • Sunday 5.20pm - A provisional post-mortem examination result showed Jay died from a stab wound.

                     

                    Det Chief Insp Simon Parkes said police are slowly piecing together the sequence of events that led to this boy’s death.

                    Three teenagers from Colchester are still being questioned in connection with the stabbing.

                    • •Sunday 3.50pm - Tributes continue to flood in for Jay. Sallie Woodward, 17, from Thorpe, said: “He was one of those guys who was always smiling.

                       

                      A police family liaison officer is supporting Jay's mum in Clacton.

                       

                       

                      • Sunday 2.20pm - Shannon Summers, 15, from Colchester, who was one of 100 to 150 teens at the party has described how the incident that led to Jay's death unfolded.

                         

                        She said: “It started in the garden, it was one on one and then others got involved.
                        “It went all the way to the front. I hid because I was scared.”

                        Shannon said she saw the victim afterwards and he wasn’t moving.
                        She went to get her stuff to leave with friends but police arrived and told her she had to stay.
                         

                        She layed flowers at the scene with mum Davinia today.

                        • Sunday 1.15pm - Cheif Insp Ed Wells has been speaking to media at the scene. He said post-mortem examination is due to be held this afternoon and the victim's identity is likely to be released later today.

                           

                          He said everyone who was at the party is a key witness.

                          Extra officers will be patrolling the area to reassure residents.

                          • Sunday 1pm - Senior Investigating Officer Det Chief Inspector Simon Parkes has released a statement:

                             

                            "This really is tragic loss of life that we, but more importantly, this boy’s parents have to deal with.

                            "This murder took place in an affluent area of Colchester and at a house party which had a garden that could cater for the 100 or so teenagers that were present.

                            "Although we don’t yet know the details of what went on, we’re slowly piecing together the sequence of events that led to this boy’s death.

                            "We’re speaking to those who were at the party, but we’re mindful that there may have been others who left either before the stabbing or in the immediate aftermath before we arrived.

                            "Everyone at this party is a key witness whether they saw anything or not and we would urge them to contact us.

                            "Our thoughts are very much also with this boy’s family. They are being supported by our family liaison officers.”

                            • Sunday 10.55am - Murder victim named by friends as Jay Whiston, 17, from Clacton. Police have not confirmed name.

                               

                              • Sunday 9.50am - Police reveal a third teenager has been arrested. It means two 18-year-old men and a 17-year-old boy are being quizzed by detectives.

                                Police have also revealed the murder victim is from the Clacton area. They have not released his identity but say his parents have been contacted.

                              • Sunday 8.40am: Police reveal they were called yesterday at 10pm following reports a 17-year-old boy had been stabbed during a disturbance outside a house in Marlowe Way.

                                 

                                Officers found a boy with abdominal injuries. Paramedics soon joined them and attempted to save his life before taking him to Colchester General Hospital. He died a short time after arrival.

                                Two people have so far been arrested on suspicion of murder and are being questioned by detectives.
