A TEENAGE cyclist died in a crash after using a crossing while the light for pedestrians was red, an inquest heard.

Jayson Gibson, 15, was killed after bring involved in a collision close to the Knowledge Gateway junction, on the A133, in February.

An inquest into the tragic boy's death, held at Chelmsford Coroner's Court, heard Jayson was out cycling with a friend when they approached a toucan crossing on the Colchester-bound carriageway.

Although the pedestrian and cyclist signals were red at the time, Jayson began to cross.

The inquest heard his friend shouted "stop", but when the teenager was about halfway across the road he was struck by a Vauxhall Astra.

He died at the scene from his injuries.

Investigating officer PC Mark Hemingway, of the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit, told the court the driver was not travelling at a speed above the 50mph speed limit.

He added that the driver would not have had the time to react to Jayson crossing the road.

Closing the inquest, senior coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray concluded Jayson died as a result of an accident.

She said: "The cause of death was recorded as fatal injuries.

"I am going to record a conclusion that Jayson Gibson died as a result of an accident.

"What a tragic accident.

"No one knows quite what was on his mind.

"Was he rushing somewhere? We will never know.

"He clearly was a much loved young man.

"What a bright future he could have had.

"I would like to express my condolences upon his death."
